crystal spring

The original dwelling was a split level bungalow property and had been subject to internal refurbishment with little attention having been given to the external fabric. In plan form the original geometries were interesting but there seemed to be little connection between the spaces. The plan form appeared to require a central point which would act like a fulcrum and also as a point of focus when arriving at the property.

Fundamentally the modified form retains most of the main wall structures and footprint yet the internal layout and external aesthetic have been improved. The raising of the roof level has allowed for further bedroom accommodation and a studio workspace for the owners who work in Communications and PR.

The entrance and circulation rotunda now connects all levels of the property and the introduction of the large circular roof lantern allows natural daylight to fill the main circulation space. The curved steel staircase and open central gallery further enhances the movement through the space.

The extended areas are clearly defined in a change of external material and the new circulation space provides a fulcrum to the extended dwelling. The original stone work has been retained in order to make it possible to read the junctions of the original form of the building with the new by utilising a complimentary yet contrasting change in material.
